I was also involved in the development of embedded systems to control very large, very specialist and extremely expensive machinery - this turned out to be a bit too specialist as there are currently only 11 sites in the entire UK where the skills I developed could be used.

When I started a career in Computing I didn't know that I was entering what has increasingly become a male-dominated profession, so it is perhaps not surprising that my research has focused mainly around the thorny question of "why don't girls and women do computer science?" When I started my first development job there were more female developers than male. Now enrolment of female students to computing courses is below 17%. There are several reasons for this but none of them are because girls and women are not capable of doing Computing.

Other interests are in the computing curriculum and how computing is taught in schools and elsewhere and around public understanding (or not) of what engineering and computing actually are and what engineers (especially software engineers) and computer scientists do when they are at work. I am also interested in the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality to engage and support learners.

Alexios LouridasDesigner
Dr Alexios Louridas has more than 10 year industry experience as a software developer.
